Finance & Accounting Professional job with University of Colorado System

Job Summary

The Finance & Accounting Professional will be a key member of
the Electrical, Computer, and Energy Engineering (ECEE) finance
team within the College of Engineering & Applied Science at CU
Boulder. This professional will be responsible for managing and
administering various fund types, including general funds, gifts,
auxiliary, and plant funds. This role will also support sponsored
research transactions in collaboration with the Senior Research
Accountant and assist the payroll and HR specialists with
transactional processing. In addition, the specialist will play a
crucial role in procurement activities, including placing orders,
reconciling accounts, and verifying purchase completions.

This position will be responsible for monitoring all assigned
SpeedTypes on a monthly basis to ensure spending remains on track
and that any deficits are promptly addressed. The professional will
work closely with the finance team and faculty to ensure budgets
are properly entered and managed in compliance with departmental,
college, and campus policies. Maintaining an up-to-date
departmental SpeedType roster and ensuring accurate personnel
assignments will also be a key responsibility.

Furthermore, this role will generate and distribute monthly
financial reports to departmental collaborators, ensuring they have
the necessary information to achieve financial objectives. As a
vital part of the department, this position directly supports
ECEE’s operational mission and strategic goals by ensuring strong
financial oversight and efficient financial processes.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Fiscal Administration:

  • Process journal entries and budget journal entries to ensure
    accurate allocation of funds, proper budget display, and correct
    expenditure and revenue postings.
  • Review and monitor departmental SpeedTypes to address deficits,
    manage surpluses, and ensure appropriate expenditures.
  • Maintain and update the departmental SpeedType roster,
    including requesting new SpeedTypes and closing obsolete ones.
  • Conduct ad hoc financial analyses, including DA-ICR allocation,
    faculty start-up and research spending, and gift fund
    utilization.
  • Prepare and distribute monthly financial reports detailing all
    departmental SpeedTypes to relevant partners.
  • Collaborate with the Finance Director to provide short-term and
    long-term financial forecasts that support departmental mission and
    strategic goals.
  • Assist the Senior Research Accountant with transactional
    processing and forecasting as needed.
  • Ensure proper recordkeeping of financial transactions,
    maintaining complete and accurate documentation.

Procurement:

  • Use a university procurement card to make purchases on behalf
    of faculty, staff, and students.
  • Review procurement requests, assess allowability, verify fund
    availability, and facilitate procurement tasks.
  • Process and review Concur reports for travel, reimbursements,
    and procurement card transactions.

Human Resources:

  • Assist in maintaining HR documentation and personnel
    records.
  • Enter personnel funding updates promptly and accurately.
  • Calculate salary expense transfers and related tuition
    transfers, ensuring correct processing.
  • Review tuition encumbrances and expenditures monthly for
    accuracy.
  • Support the payroll liaison during peak periods to ensure
    timely submission of transactions.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Apply a strong understanding of fund accounting and
    departmental financial policies to all financial operations.
  • Identify strengths and weaknesses in financial control
    procedures and assist in process improvements.
  • Collaborate with staff and leadership to develop ongoing and ad
    hoc financial reports that support operational and strategic
    goals.
  • Represent the department on committees as a staff
    representative.
  • Attend college-level budget meetings and represent ECEE in the
    Finance Director’s absence.
  • Undertake other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Stay apprised and current on relevant University and State of
    Colorado policies and procedures.
  • Participate in professional development activities and serves
    on unit, college or campus committees as applicable.

What We Can Offer

The starting salary range for this position is $58,000 – $62,000
annually. Relocation assistance is available within department
guidelines.

What We Require

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business
    administration, or a related field. Equivalent combination of
    education and experience may be considered.
  • One or more years of experience in finance, accounting,
    budgeting, or a related field.

  • Experience managing multiple funding sources, including grants,
    gifts, and general funds.

    procedures in a university or research environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare financial forecasts and analyze
    spending trends.
  • Experience with HR transactions, payroll processing, and
    tuition allocations.
  • Solid problem-solving skills and ability to develop process
    improvements.
  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to communicate
    efficiently and effectively.
  • Ability to handle multiple interruptions and be able to learn
    and respond quickly to unexpected situations
  • Motivated, proactive, and self-starting.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • aster’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration,
    or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in financial administration, including
    fund management, procurement, and/or human resources
    transactions.
  • Experience working in higher education, research institutions,
    or government financial management.
  • Experience with university financial systems such as
    PeopleSoft, Concur, or similar platforms.
  • General understanding of the rules and regulations that drive
    university processes (e.g. Fiscal Code of Ethics, procurement
    rules, etc.).
