The Division of Undergraduate Education and Student Success and
University Housing co-sponsor five Faculty-in-Residence (FIR)
positions at the University of Oregon housed in the Global Scholars
Hall, Justice Bean Hall, Kalapuya Ilihi Hall, Unthank Hall, and the
New Residence. FIR at the University of Oregon helps shape the
intellectual life of the residence halls and expand the academic
enterprise beyond the walls of the classroom. The institution’s
adoption of a live-on requirement in fall 2017 signaled a
recognition of the academic benefits of a residential campus, and
the FIR program complements a network of academic partnerships with
University Housing/UESS including Academic Residential Communities
(ARCs), Faculty Fellows, the Academic Success Hub, and
Undergraduate Research and Distinguished Scholarships Hub.

FIR support students’ social and academic transitions to a liberal
arts and sciences research university through a range of formal to
informal co-curricular programming and engagements. FIR become
integral members of the live-in Residence Life team comprising
Community Directors and Resident Assistants, and contribute to the
actualization of the Residential Curriculum-the framework for
facilitating resident and community development-in their particular
residence hall. Ultimately, FIR design co-curricular plans for
programs, events, and activities, which may articulate with their
disciplinary expertise and personal interests, but generally appeal
to all residents and offer broad-based academic support. University
Housing will provide FIR with administrative support to enable them
to focus their work on mentoring, advising, and engaging
    undergraduates.
