Alvarez College of Business

Department of Management Science and
Statistics

The department has 17 tenured/tenure-track and nine fixed-term
faculty members. Faculty members are actively engaged in research
and support the existing doctoral, master, and undergraduate
programs within the college. The department offers undergraduate
degrees in actuarial science, business analytics, operations and
supply chain management, and statistics and data science. The
department also offers certificates in business analytics, and
operations and supply chain management.

The Department of Management Science and Statistics is deeply
committed to the professional growth and development of its faculty
members. To support this commitment, we offer a variety of
resources and opportunities designed to enhance the professional
journey of our faculty. This includes funding for attending
conferences, workshops, and seminars that are relevant to their
fields of expertise. Furthermore, the department encourages and
supports faculty participation in further training in innovative
teaching methods and pedagogy to enhance classroom engagement and
student learning outcomes. Our goal is to ensure that faculty
members have the resources and support they need to achieve their
career aspirations and contribute significantly to the academic and
research missions of the department, college, and university.

Position Summary

This position aims at fulfilling the department’s increasing need
to support the fast-growing business analytics program, the B.B.A.
in Business Analytics. It aligns with the department’s, college’s,
and university’s strategic focus areas (e.g., business analytics,
data sciences, applied statistics, artificial intelligence,
healthcare analytics, etc.) for research and teaching excellence at
UTSA. The primary responsibility of this position will be to teach
business analytics courses from the current UTSA catalog. This
position also needs to help recruit Business Analytics majors,
develop courses to expand the curriculum, mentor students, and
involve students in experiential learning activities. Overall, this
position will provide unique teaching perspectives that will expand
the profile of the department and current faculty.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • An earned Master’s in Business Analytics, Applied Statistics,
    Data Science, Management Science, Decision Sciences, Operations
    Management, Operations Research, or a closely related area from an
    accredited university with 3+ years of industry experience in
    related areas.

    • An earned Ph.D. (or expected by the fall semester of 2025) may
      substitute for industry experience.
  • Expertise in teaching one or more of the following areas:
    business analytics, data mining, database management, machine
    learning, applied statistics, management science, decision
    sciences, operations management, predictive and prescriptive
    analytics tools and techniques, time series and forecasting, supply
    chain, operations research, and data visualization.
  • Proficiency in statistical computing languages, such as R, SAS,
    SQL, Python, and/or Tableau.
  • Teaching credentials that include experience in career-engaged,
    and experiential and active learning pedagogies.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • The ability and desire to work collegially with faculty and
    students.
  • Evidence of integrating technology into instruction, on-line
    teaching, or using other emerging technologies.
  • Ability to teach across multiple modalities, including
    face-to-face, online, and hybrid.
  • The successful candidate must have the ability to work with and
    be sensitive to the educational needs of students and be committed
    to assisting the University’s commitment to thrive as a Hispanic
    Serving Institution.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An earned Ph.D. (or expected by the fall semester of 2025) in
    Business Analytics, Applied Statistics, Data Science, Management
    Science, Decision Sciences, Operations Management, Operations
    Research, or a closely related area from an accredited
    university.
  • Strong interests in collaborations with practitioners from: (i)
    local and regional industry partners (e.g., USAA, H-E-B, etc.);
    (ii) local research institutions (e.g., UT Health San Antonio,
    Southwest Research Institute, etc.).
  • Experience forming partnerships with local industry to provide
    students with internship and co-op opportunities.
  • Evidence of service to the university, field, or profession
    through leadership in analytics-related organizations.
  • Engagement in services related to undergraduate students,
    including curriculum development, competency development, program
    evaluation, student assessment and student mentoring.
  • Proven ability or strong interest in cross-departmental
    collaboration within the business school to enhance
    interdisciplinary learning and research. This includes facilitating
    pathways for students interested in pursuing double majors or
    shared courses that complement their business analytics
    education.

Salary Range: Salary and benefits are competitive
and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Hours: Up to 40 hours per week, exempt.
