Job Description
The Academic Advisor is responsible for providing academic advising
to prospective, new, transfer, and continuing education students in
both individual and group settings. Advising topics include course
selection, major exploration, credit hours, and academic
planning.
We implement a caseload advising model in which students are
assigned to advisors based on their area of study. However, our
advisors are cross-trained in ten areas of study, allowing them to
provide comprehensive guidance across multiple disciplines. This
approach enhances flexibility and ensures a well-rounded advising
experience for students.
In addition to academic advising, the Academic Advisor provides
expertise in program requirements, participates in retention
initiatives, and may be involved in college-specific special
projects. They work closely with students to develop personalized
success plans, connect them with resources, and take proactive
steps to support their academic achievement.
The ideal candidate can:
- Articulate and communicate effectively with students, parents,
faculty, and staff. - Accommodate a work schedule that extends beyond a traditional 8
AM-5 PM schedule when required. - Be intentional about creating an affirming and inclusive space
for the diverse student population we serve. - Serve as a knowledgeable resource for students and
colleagues.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
OR an equivalent combination of education and
experience. - One (1) year in post-secondary/graduate assistant experience in
college recruitment, advising, or retention services.
Preferred Qualifications
- Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) experience.
- Direct academic advising and/or coaching experience in a
community college setting. - Demonstrated understanding of the purpose and function of
community colleges. - Working knowledge of PeopleSoft as it pertains to Student
Services, Degree Audits, Running reports, and related duties.
Ability to provide effective personal and academic advisement to a
diverse college student body. - Bilingual Spanish.
The duties, knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position
include, but are not limited to:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to effectively communicate information and
ideas. - Exhibit excellent critical-thinking skills through a
demonstrated ability to interpret and evaluate explanations of
problems of sensitive and complex nature, analyzing and defining
uses obtained explicitly and implicitly from students, faculty and
staff. - Ability to develop specific goals and plans to prioritize,
organize, and accomplish the tasks at hand. - Demonstrate a strong understanding of institutional
policies. - Good knowledge of discussing educational goals with students;
identifying student strengths and weaknesses. - Experience: in student counseling, development, education, or
related field. - Demonstrate ability to provide effective academic, personal,
financial, adjustment and career advisement to a diverse college
student population. - Can demonstrate the ability to create and access documents
utilizing Microsoft Office. - Understand advising theories and advising best
practices. - Possess strong problem-solving skills, resourcefulness, and
demonstrated ability as a self-started planning and carrying out
short-term and long-term action plans. - Must be approachable and personable and articulate with
excellent writing, interpersonal and public speaking skills, and
able to communicate effectively with students, parents, faculty and
staff. - Can demonstrate competency utilizing technology (Microsoft
Teams/WebEx) to provide positive customer service to students,
faculty, and staff.

Administrative Faculty B – The starting salary is $50,207.
