Duties & Responsibilities

Position Description

The VCU College of Engineering has brought innovative, real-world engineering education to Central Virginia. Comprised of five different departments (biomedical engineering, chemical and life science engineering, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, and mechanical and nuclear engineering), the VCU College of Engineering enrolls more than 2,000 undergraduate and 450 graduate students in several degree programs supported by approximately 600 full time, part-time, and student employees. Over the past several years, research expenditures have quadrupled and lead to the generation of meaningful research results at the forefront of technology. Collaborations in the VCU College of Engineering include VCU schools, colleges, centers, and other university and industry partners.

The department of Electrical and Computer Engineering within the VCU College of Engineering is seeking a Research Scientist to Artificial Intelligence (AI).

This position will be responsible for:

  • The successful candidate will have a unique opportunity to develop and expand upon a diversified technical skill set while making a positive contribution to computer vision, cybersecurity, and machine learning.
  • Research projects for this position will involve deep learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch) and image processing libraries (e.g., OpenCV).
  • The ideal candidate will have a strong background in machine learning and programming Python or C++.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have experience in publishing high-impact journal papers such as IEEE and ACM.
  • In this position, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work and collaborate with a vast network of scientists and engineers.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Engineering and Science, or a related discipline, or equivalent educations and work experience that equates to a Ph.D.
  • Experience with the AI or Computer Vision.
  • Demonstrated ability to publish research findings, preferably in high impact scientific journal.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with research teams to better assist them in accomplishing their goal.
  • Strong written/oral skills required, and ability to communicate technical concepts to a non-technical audience.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience high-quality academic or conference papers.
  • Ph.D. in Engineering and Science, or a related discipline
